In the last days perilous times will come, for men will be lovers of themselves ... rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness, but denying its power.
2 Timothy 3:1 - 5
A local newspaper reported that the Luxemburg government was considering abolishing religion as a school subject and incorporating it in a new subject entitled “Life and the community”. The paper then invited its readers to state whether they would welcome the change in their own state. Over 67% approved the proposal.
Is this not a dear indication of the truth of today's verse? Since World War II Christianity has suffered from a constant increase in atheism and agnosticism, while the decline in the number of God-fearing citizens has had a marked effect on the moral thinking of the population as a whole. Let us not imagine for a moment that God will overlook such negligence!
All human beings of every age are responsible to God for the way they lead their life. Because of the sinfulness of the human heart God Himself provided the only means by which we can meet His approval: the acceptance of the Saviour He sent and the work He accomplished.
This compels us to appeal to our readers to reflect on their own attitude towards God and their standing before Him. The first Psalm states: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners” (v.1). It ends with the words: “The way of the ungodly shall perish" (v.6). “Perishing” does not signify mere physical corruption nor total extinction. It means being condemned to eternal torment in hell. The way of escape is to confess all one’s wrongdoings before God and accept Jesus Christ by faith as the Saviour of sinners.
