I know the thoughts that 1 think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
“No future” was a well-known slogan at the start of the punk movement in the 1970’s. People could read it ever where on the walls of our cities. “No future” expressed the disappointment and frustration of the young who despaired of having no future: just existing without real life.
Today, nearly fifty years later, we are rarely confronted with this concept except for one aspect: the fear of an uncertain future. People see the unstoppable progress of technology. But what is there besides? Injustice, unkindness, unfaithfulness, social conflict corruption, terrorism, drugs, serious illnesses etc..
Mankind seeks encouragement and help in overcoming the difficulties. But what can help? Our materialism does not satisfy the heart. Religion seems a thing of the past. People are turning to superstition or conceiving their own faith - all doomed to bring disappointment.
Is there then no future, no hope? Indeed there is! We can have a joyful future, if we turn to God, believing in Jesus Christ. Then we shall be able to rejoice over God’s wonderful promises stated in today's verse: God is love. He saves all who seek Him: “You will seek me
. . . and I will be found by you” (Jeremiah 29, 13.14).
God is extending His arms to welcome whoever fears a dismal future ahead. He will grant a future that makes sense.
