My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother.
In the fear of the LORD there is strong confidence, and his children will have a place of refuge. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death.

Proverbs 1:8; 14:26-27

A young man was falling further and further into criminal activity. He was going from one offence to another. Finally he was committing armed robbery.

One day he appeared at a bank counter armed and demanded money. The cashier, an elderly lady stared at him and, without being able to explain why later, threw caution to the winds and started speaking to him earnestly.

“My boy, you are about to ruin your life. Sooner or later you will be caught and imprisoned.

Just consider that! And remember what your mother has taught you!” For a moment there was tense silence in the building. The young gangster then turned round and went off without saying a word.

Some days later the young man went to the police and owned up to the intended crime. He answered the question why he had left the bank without any loot as follows: “That woman reminded me of my mother. She spoke like her and looked like her.”

This occurrence underlines how important parents’ upbringing is for their children. It is helpful if attention is paid not only to proper conduct towards one’s fellow citizens and their possessions. If children learn from their parents how important reverence before God is, they then have a valuable standard that can give them guidance and a firm standing in all life’s circumstances.
